Slovakia to Hungary

Day 2 begins in Bratislava, with a tough 106 mile day taking the team from Slovakia across Hungary’s rugged terrain to Balatonalmadi. The journey ascends 1404 metres, and will be a real challenge with the preceding day’s aches and pains kicking in.

Slovakia: Slovakia is quite flat for the most part of today’s ride.
Hungary: Hungary presents a challenge, with some mountainous terrain meaning a lot of climbing and high altitudes.

Journey Update

One day down, six to go. Or, to word it in a slightly more encouraging fashion, three countries down, four to go.

Yesterday, our team traversed 103 miles to Bratislava on their first day’s pedalling for charity. How did they get on?

700 miles ahead of them: the awesome foursome outside the hotel in Brno.

The first big obstacle was right outside the hotel in Brno. Some may say that a tram system is a sensible and environmentally-friendly method of public transport, but with lethal bike-tyre-width tramlines littered across and along the city roads, it’s a wonder that Gary stayed upright for more than a couple of minutes. But the boys stayed strong and soon headed off out into the Czech countryside.

103 miles of gently undulating countryside. Doesn’t sound like too much hassle, does it? Well, factor in a 20 mph headwind and it soon felt more like a thousand and three miles. Swimming through treacle started to look like an easy option.

… and the Austrian border.

Keeping a positive mental attitude on these tours is crucial. So to keep spirits up and to discourage any negativity, it was decided at the first rest stop that the boys would establish a “neg box” – our version of a swear box, whereby any instance of negativity, moaning or whingeing would incur a charge of £20, with all monies donated to our 2 great charities. Any negativity counts – moaning about the weather, the route, the hills, the pain in your legs or any other – ahem - sensitive areas…and that’s £20 please.

Neg box - Scores on the doors:

Gary: 2

Olly: 1

James: 0

Miles: 9

(4 about the headwind – simple aerodynamics, and 5 about Olly strewing his gear around like in a teenager’s bedroom)

Sean: 1 (his tolerance level for poor driving being slightly less than you’d find in a German engineered hinge)

So that’s another £250 for our two fantastic charities. We’re well on the way to reaching our target of £100,000 raised, so a massive thank you to all of you who have donated so far, and if you haven’t yet, you know what to do - link below!

Tomorrow the quartet tackle the 107 mile marathon from Bratislava to Balatonalmadi. How will they get on? Well, I guess you’ll just have to check back here to find out...
